This is the essential Arabic instruction book you never knew you needed. I have been studying Arabic for 9 years. As any native English speaker who studies Arabic knows, it is a difficult journey. I spent my first 5 years learning Arabic through Al-Kitaab, which is a great textbook, but its focus is NOT on functionality, whereas Tarek's book is.Al-Kitaab's most famous critique is that you learn the word for "United Nations" before you learn how to say "where is the bathroom?" This is a huge problem in Arabic instruction in America! In Modern Standard Arabic: An Arabic Reading Book, the chapters focus on key aspects of Arab culture and life, while introducing vocabulary that is extremely functional. There are chapters on personal hygiene, LGBTQ issues, safety in an Arab metropolis, basketball, cultural issues specific to certain Arab countries, like Cairo after the Arab Spring, the Religious Police in Saudi Arabia, or that Ashura holiday in Bahrain.
Another key aspect of Arabic that Tarek nails in his book, is the relationship between Modern Standard Arabic and local dialects. While the book is called "Modern Standard Arabic: An Arabic Reading Book," anyone who knows anything about Arabic knows that any potential speaker must navigate the relationship between colloquial and formal. Most instruction programs completely ignore the dialects, because technically it is not "true Arabic," but hey ignore the fact that most Arabs speak MSA as a second language, and their native language is their local dialect. In this book, Tarek shows you the links between colloquial and formal, and how to derive meaning and fluency in dialect through a nuanced and thoughtful mastery of MSA.
I could write another book about how great this book is, but in short, I want to say that this is the Arabic book you must have! It is an advanced book, but is useful for any Arabic student who already knows the alphabet and some basic sentence structure. One thing's for sure: whatever you level of Arabic mastery, this book will challenge you. It can range from familiar vocabulary about mosques and Islamic culture, to sex politics in Egypt and LGBTQ issues. Tarek teases out the most useful aspects of dialect with incredible skill and discernment.
This book cuts right to the heart of exactly what a lot of people who study Arabic feel like we're missing out on: we can say "seven people were killed in a demonstration in Hebron," but we are at a loss for words when trying to express something as simple as "pass the salt." Tarek balances the political reasons why most English speakers want to learn Arabic with the functionality and cultural knowledge that is essential for connecting to other humans who grew up speaking the language you're trying to learn!
For years, I've felt that fluency in Arabic is a pipe dream of mine, and that I'll never be able to fill those gaps in my language training. Tarek's book is the key. The seamless marriage of colloquial understanding and MSA, combined with a sense of brutal honesty and universal humanity sheds new light on the Arabic language, and finally, offers a way in, a way to bridge the gap in understanding, the likes of which we have never seen before.
